Chaturanga is the story of a love that is caught between conflicting worlds of ideas and becomes, after a point, a psychodrama of unbelievable cruelty. Set in Colonial Bengal at the turn of the twentieth century, the film weaves a rich tapestry of crisscrossing desires and moralities. The award winning cast includes Dhritiman Chaterji, Rituparna Sengupta, Joy Sengupta, Kabir Suma, and Subrata Dutta as Sachish.
The film’s music creates a soundscape that expresses feeling, the music evokes a blend of eroticism and divinity. Taken from folk traditions of Bengal and North India that are eclectic blends of Islamic, Buddhist, and lower caste Hindu thought.
The film is 125 minutes long and is presented in the Bengali language:

About Family Planning-
The patriarch of a chaotic family living in a hectic land must come to terms with himself and what he's wrought at home and at work in this excellent debut. Rakesh Ahuja battles the twin bedlams of his sprawling family and overcrowded home city of New Delhi while simultaneously trying to save his career as the minister of urban development. Rakesh attempts to manipulate and cajole his way through the corrupt and sometimes illogical Indian civil service, often finding himself embroiled in absurd intrigues. Home is no less fraught, where his 13 children battle each other for their often-absent father's love. The lone exception is Arjun, the eldest, whose adolescent rebellion and nascent romantic inclinations prompt him to form a rock band and pull away from his frenetic family. As Rakesh clumsily reaches out to his first-born son, the twists of fate that shaped both their lives are revealed, providing a portrait of a family that is both comical and heartbreaking. Mahajan's effortless blending of comedy and tragedy is irresistible and should help his book stand out.

- TiE presents- Believe in the next big idea The Be! Fund in India, October 9 at Tamarind Art.
What would it mean to invest in young entrepreneurs from low-income groups in India to transform their communities socially, environmentally, economically?
BE! is a multi-media project of stories [13 epic movies, 50 books, a 30 part radio series + an online portal] to inspire millions of young people from low income groups to choose to become entrepreneurs and as a result, submit business ideas to the Be! fund that solve the social, economic and environmental problems they face in their lives.
To make new enterprise ideas a reality, the Be! fund will invest in 75 young people to lead their businesses for social change. Their stories will in turn, be shared across India, inspiring the next generation to give it a try.
Why? Because in 2020, more than 50% of the estimated 210 million unemployed people in India will be under the age of 30; projected employment creation rates will never be able to accommodate everyone.
Entrepreneurship for social and economic change is one solution.

ABOUT DANIEL LAK
Daniel Lak is a reporter with the BBC who reported on the Indian sub-continent for twelve years, working from Pakistan and New Delhi. He reported on the rise and fall of the Taliban, Kurdish refugees in Iran, India's 1999 war with Pakistan over Kashmir, and the hijacking of an Indian aircraft by Islamic militants in what later became known as a dry-run for 9/11. Lak now lives in Toronto reporting for the BBC from the Americas and making documentaries.
ABOUT "India Express: The Future of the New Superpower" In evocative prose and with street-level reporting, Daniel Lak argues that India has become a global superpower because of its religion, caste, politics, and poverty, and not in spite of it. He looks
presciently to the future, and concludes that the strength that democracy gives it means that India is much better positioned to sustain its newfound status than China, whose political system is sure to eventually hinder it.
As an expert who has covered the region for the BBC for the last twelve years, Lak weaves together his substantive knowledge of Indian politics, economics, and culture with fascinating stories of everyday people.
India Express incisively explores the most urgent challenges facing India in the 21st century:
· The governance and development of the most religiously,
culturally, and linguistically di verse population on the planet
· Crushing poverty--with 300 million on less $2 a day--despite the
rise of the largest middle class the world has ever known

Baithak performance by Pandit Birju Maharaj on June 25, 2008, 6:30 to 8:30pm.
Tamarind Arts Council is pleased to announce Baithak performance by Pandit Birju Maharaj on June 25, 2008, 6:30 to 8:30pm.
Kathak* is a partially narrative classical dance form from North India which is characterized by fast footwork (tatkar), spins (chakkar) and innovative use of (bhav) expressions in abhinaya*. Performers today generally draw their lineage from three major schools of Kathak: the Jaipur gharana*, the Lucknow gharana and the Banaras gharana; born in the courts of the Kachwaha Rajput kings, the Nawab of Oudh, and Varanasi, respectively.
Pandit Birju Maharaj is the torchbearer of the famous family, Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Lucknow. Named Brijmohan Nath Mishra, he is a descendant of the legendary Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, including his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lacchu Maharaj and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj. He took Kathak to new heights by composing choreography of new Kathak dance dramas. He has toured extensively across the globe, given thousands of performances and held hundreds of workshops for Kathak students.
Even though dancing is his first love, he also has an excellent command over Hindustani classical music and is an accomplished vocalist as well having command over Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan, Abhinaya and Ghazals, which will be a part of this Baithak.
*The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word katha meaning story, and katthaka in Sanskrit means s/he who tells a story, or to do with stories.
* Abhinaya is a concept in Indian dance and drama derived from Bharata's work of dramatic theory, encompassing dance and music, in classical India.
* In Hindustani music, a gharana is a system of social organization linking musicians or dancers by lineage and/or apprenticeship, and by adherence to a particular musical style.

ABOUT LOVE MARRIAGE- Debut Novel
In this globe-scattered Sri Lankan family, we speak of only two kinds of marriage. The first is the Arranged Marriage. The second is the Love Marriage. In reality, there is a whole spectrum in between but most of us spend years running away from the first towards the second. (p.3)
Yalini, the daughter of Sri Lankan immigrants who left their collapsing country and married in America, finds herself caught between the history of her ancestors and her own modern world. But when she is summoned to Toronto to help care for her dying uncle, Kumaran, a former member of the militant Tamil Tigers, she is forced to see that violence is not a relic of the Sri Lankan past, but very much a part of her Western present.
While Kumaran’s loved ones gather around him to say goodbye, Yalini traces her family’s roots – and the conflicts facing them as ethnic Tamils-through a series of marriages. Now, as Kumaran’s death and his daughter’s politically motivated nuptials edge closer, in the tradition of her family, Yalini too must decide where she stands.
Quotes: “A complex, moving evocation of love and war-two ideas which overlap more often, and more dramatically, than we often care to recognize. Love Marriage is an impressive debut.”- Daniel Alarcon, PEN/Hemingway finalist for War by Candlelight, author of Lost City Radio, one of Granta’s Best Young American Novelists.
“In her clear-eyed first novel, V.V. Ganeshananthan has given us a riveting picture of a Sri Lanka at odds with itself, both at home and abroad, and of the intersections of love and war that shape us all. A debut of incredible passion and wisdom.”- Rebecca Johns, PEN/Hemingway finalist for Icebergs.
