Since its inception, we have been a major advocate of contemporary Indian art by promoting the genre to a western and global audience. In addition to showcasing high caliber art, our mission is to become the foremost resource center for gaining an understanding of Indian art and artists, the proper care, restoration, and conservation of art in various media, and other areas of interest to individuals, businesses, and art investors.
The gallery was inaugurated as a museum in April 2003 by M. F. Husain, one of the most celebrated Indian artists of our time. Featured in the show was "Lightning", a mammoth 12-panel, 10 ft x 60 ft work, his largest. Other exhibitions we have had the honor to present include "50 Years of Bal Chhabda: Paintings in New York," an extraordinary showcase of over half a century of never-before-seen works. The exhibition was Chhabda´s first in the United States, a most reclusive artist; this was only the third solo show of his prolific career. We have also had the privilege of showcasing Akbar Padamsee’s “Lines of Distinction, Strokes of Genius, Works on Paper 1959-2006”.
TamarindArt’s vision is to curate exhibitions that reflect a healthy balance between senior established artists and younger talents working with experimental forms of conceptual installations. This combination reflects some of the most important trends in contemporary Indian art. As part of our on-going effort, we support other art museums and cultural communities around the world. We host other events as well, including book readings and signings, and we have become a nexus for many art organizations.

TamarindArt is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, at 142 East 39th Street, New York City. Our hours of operation are Tuesday – Friday 11 am to 6 pm, Saturdays noon to 6 pm. About the Owners:
TamarindArt was founded by Marguerite & Kent Charugundla who have been collecting art since 1994. Beginning with mostly European works, they expanded their interests to Indian contemporary art in 1998 by purchasing paintings by senior Indian artists. With educational and professional expertise in chemistry, real estate, engineering, and the telecommunication industry, their passion for Indian art has always remained strong. The Charugundlas and their dedicated professional staff with over fifty years of combined experience in the art field are committed to the promotion of contemporary Indian art.
